What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is the principle of financially rewarding a third party for every paying customer they introduce. Typically the reward is a percentage of the customers total spend and is commonly referred to as a commission.  Alternatively the reward can be a fixed amount (or bounty) and can work this way for lead based introductions.

In internet jargon this reward process is called a Cost per Action or CPA and in most cases the ‘action’ is a purchase.  It is important to note that the ‘action’ may also be; applying for a loan, joining a database, completing a questionnaire, entering a completion, etc.  However in most cases this action is an online monetary transaction.

A transactional website is referred to as a Merchant (or Advertiser) e.g. www.woolworths.co.uk

A supplier of traffic to a merchant is referred to as an Affiliate (or publisher). These can be categorised as shopping portals, true content sites, search specialists, shopping comparison or reward/incentive based partners.
